One of my great irritations of modern life is the string of routine messages I receive on social media. This comes mostly in the form of “Happy Birthday!” on Facebook and “Congrats on the anniversary!” from Linkedin.
Don’t get me wrong – I love the attention and I’m not too proud to admit that I count up the number of Happy Birthday posts and judge that against that other people receive. Call me shallow.
But when I see post after post that are essentially saying the same thing, even exactly the same thing, the magic wears off.
Of course, I’ve done the same thing to other people. “At least I was doing something” I think. I even started to get creative with my birthday posts with “Happy, Happy Birthday!”. Somehow I thought the extra “Happy” combined with the exclamation point would make a big difference.
But I think I have found a better way. Something that takes advantage of our technology and still honors what makes a person special.
I call it a Soulful Selfie and they are awesome.
Instead of posting some routine text, pullout your phone, and video yourself saying “Happy Birthday” or “congrats” and then a few words about why that person is special to you.
Yes – you have to get used to not looking perfect (I’m always amazed at the size of my head) but you inevitably say something special about that person and that is worth the effort.
More importantly A Soulful Selfie forces me to pause and think about the person and how they impact my life. So easy to get caught up in hustle and bustle and forget that you have amazing friends, family and/or colleagues.
If you like this idea, do a few Soulful Selfies and let me know what you think. Only take a couple minutes and I promise you will have more fun then you think.
