You Are videos are fundamentally a tribute to the person receiving the video. After all they are about what that person means to those that love them and that gets said in way that can’t be ignored or deflected. But the videos are also a statement about the person that places the order. Starting one of these videos is bold, daring and takes courage. the videos become a testament about the love that my client has for that special person.
That fact became painfully clear when I got the news that a client and friend of mine died in an tragic accident over the holiday break. His passing occurred the day after I had delivered to him the video that we had done for his girl friend and the day before he was planning to show it her.
Needless to say I was in shock. Even more so when I realized that on my computer was the video that we had been working on for the past month and that he was so excited to give his girlfriend. The week after the tragedy, I talked with his girlfriend (we’ll call her Jenny) and amongst the tears she told me how he had been bouncing off the walls with giddy excitement. According to her friends, he kept asking them about “how should I show this?” and “Should we show it with the kids or wait to the go to bed?”.
I had no idea if she had seen it or not but I knew that he wanted her to. So I found myself delivering a DVD to her doorstep with a note introducing myself and the project.
It wasn’t his last will and testament but it was a testament about the love, pride, and admiration he felt for the love of his life. In one of our email exchanges he wrote “I am certain this is a perfect gift for her”.
I was (and am) saddened by this loss but balancing that grief is a great sense of pride and gratitude that we did video now and didn’t wait to something regular like her birthday or their anniversary. My friend’s boldness made it happen. He just new that she would love it and help her see how special he was to him and all those that loved her.
In the end, the video became a statement about how special he was and how much he was loved by his family and friends. Someday Jenny will be able to watch it and feel the love people have for her. But for now, we can all look at the video and feel the love we feel for him.
For that, it is a real treasure and something that fills me with great pride.
